An Assessment of Digital Adoption and Inclusion in Ayrshire

Background

FarrPoint was commissioned by the Ayrshire 5G Innovation Region to assess their performance on digital connectivity. Using our Digital Connectivity Readiness Index (DCRI) framework, our review identified that while progress has been made in digital infrastructure, certain areas needed improvement. Simultaneously, we conducted a thorough investigation into the related challenges of digital exclusion and the adoption of technology and connectivity solutions within Ayrshire. Our findings led to a series of recommendations and actionable next steps for local stakeholders to boost digital inclusion and the use of technology and connectivity in the region.

FarrPoint’s digital inclusion study has been invaluable to Ayrshire. It’s given us a clear, evidence-based understanding of the digital gaps and challenges across the region. One of the key findings was the pressing need for better support around access to data and devices, particularly in communities facing affordability issues. With this insight, we’re now better equipped to work with our partners to prioritise the areas most in need and take action to prevent the digital divide from growing wider.

The Challenge

To understand the extent of digital exclusion and the take-up of technology and connectivity solutions across Ayrshire, we applied a range of metrics. This required in-depth data analysis and policy review, complemented by qualitative research.

What FarrPoint Delivered:

The report produced by FarrPoint presented a clear picture of digital connectivity across Ayrshire, complemented by an in-depth exploration of digital adoption and inclusion within the area and associated mapping, interviews and workshops. The report's key findings and recommendations were:

• There had been a critical contribution of increased mobile connectivity for those with financial limitations in accessing fixed infrastructure.
• While digital skills learning, supported by Ayrshire Councils and local stakeholders, had a significant positive impact, ongoing work is needed to ensure residents gain the digital skills required for employment.
• There is a need for a greater focus on improving online wellbeing and digital confidence, which stakeholders believe is best achieved through engagement with community organisations.
• A recommendation for Ayrshire to develop a regional strategy to enhance digital inclusion and adoption.
