Connectivity Resilience Assessment for UKAEA Data Centre at Culham Campus

FarrPoint was appointed by the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) to assess connectivity requirements for a planned AI focussed data centre at the Culham Campus in Oxfordshire. The study addressed the challenges of providing highly resilient, low-latency fibre connectivity from multiple providers.

Background

The (this will open in a new window)UKAEA’s vision for (this will open in a new window)Culham Campus is to create a state-of-the-art data centre serving government, research, and commercial clients by 2027. Positioned as a hub for AI and High-Performance Computing, the data centre will be required to transfer vast amounts of critical data at high speeds with minimal latency.

At the heart of this project is the need for reliable, future-proof fibre infrastructure. This will ensure the site’s readiness not just for initial operations but also for long-term scalability, with the potential to expand to fivefold capacity. FarrPoint was tasked with determining the level of resilient connectivity requirements to the site, evaluating current operator capabilities to serve the site, identifying any gaps that might hinder the facility’s success and recommending a strategy for development, including costing of any upgrades required.

We were very impressed with the pace and quality of FarrPoint’s response on this project which was a significant factor enabling the government’s recent announcement that Culham Campus could host the UK’s first AI Growth Zone

Joe Milnes, UKAEA Executive Director for Engineering and Computing

The Challenge

To ensure that the Culham Campus could support the connectivity needs of an AI data centre, a number of key requirements were identified:

What FarrPoint Delivered
