To address potential coverage challenges in the new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, FarrPoint carried out an assessment of mobile enhancement solutions to ensure reliable signal strength and capacity.
(this will open in a new window)Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary (DGRI) required reliable mobile coverage to support hospital operations, staff communication, and patient connectivity. However, there were concerns that the hospital buildings could obstruct mobile signals, making it challenging to maintain consistent coverage. Inadequate mobile coverage could impact both the efficiency of hospital operations and the quality of patient experience. The Health Board needed assurance that indoor signal levels would match those recorded before construction, excluding shielded areas such as MRI rooms and lift cars.
The Health Board needed an assessment of mobile coverage and enhancement solutions to ensure that signal strength met pre-build levels across key areas, including the hospital interior, the Energy Centre, residences, and external spaces within the site boundary. Without a reliable mobile signal, staff communication and operational resilience could be compromised, particularly in critical zones of the hospital. Any infrastructure improvements had to be planned efficiently within the hospital’s construction timeline, ensuring readiness by the facility’s scheduled opening.
FarrPoint was engaged to:
A Distributed Antenna System (DAS) was identified as the most effective solution for this particular hospital site.
FarrPoint ensured the recommended solution was deliverable, reviewing a Concept Design and working with MNOs to:
FarrPoint’s assessment provided the Health Board and contractors with a recommended solution for ensuring mobile coverage was available to support operational, clinical, and patient needs. The FarrPoint report provided clear next steps to implement the solution, enabling the Board to engage directly with the MNOs to ensure that a viable, operator-approved solution was in place before the hospital’s opening. This meant mobile coverage challenges could be addressed proactively before patients and staff occupied the facility.
