In this latest webinar, we discussed the state of resilience of the UK's fixed and mobile networks. Our panel explored key questions regarding the risks and potential solutions, responsibility and required investment. Read the key takeaways or watch the recording.
Key takeaways from the webinar
Network resilience is a key area of focus for each of the panel organisations
The resilience of an individual connection is dependent on a range of factors, including location, communications provider, and the connection technology used. This means it is complex to work out the impact of a power outage or other incident affecting connectivity.
The role of end users - all organisations should have their own network resilience plans in place, big or small.
Resilience isn't just a technical issue - communications and awareness raising is a very significant part of this preparedness.
Satellite technology is being seen as high on the list to support terrestrial network resilience and mitigation.
Power outages is a common issue and investment in trialing of self-powering technology like wind or solar panels is key.
Public sector resilience is not just about resilience for emergency services, it's much wider. It's about governments working with local authorities to ensure local community resilience. From identifying risks and putting processes in place (i.e. processes for contacting vulnerable people in emergencies).
Resilience testing exercises should be considered where possible, BT talking about their own regular 'war game' exercises together with other utilities companies.
Resilience needs investment - that's no surprise, and for that, we need to prioritise what networks are the most important. There are various Ofcom consultations on resilience live so do have your input and say.
