As more UK local authority areas are awarded Gigabit infrastructure contracts, we pose the challenge - what's next? It is clear that project Gigabit will not reach all premises and even if it did, our job does not stop there and it's just one piece of the puzzle. At FarrPoint, we came up with a concept that assesses local authorities connectivity readiness and provides a detailed plan for completing the local connectivity jigsaw.
UK investment in expanding fibre connectivity to reach 85%+ coverage has been a huge focus of attention over the last few years, and a measure of success. However, the roll out of Gigabit connectivity is only one part of the digital connectivity puzzle. As shown in the diagram below, connectivity infrastructure alone, without adoption, does not produce any benefits.
Only when that digital infrastructure is rolled out and utilised by households, businesses and public sector we will see economic growth, aid the journey towards Net Zero and improve social wellbeing.
At FarrPoint, we came up with a 5-step plan that local authorities could take to evaluate the current connectivity readiness that will then feed into an all-encompassing digital strategy and implementation plan.
As the first step, we suggest undertaking the FarrPoint's in-depth Digital Connectivity Readiness Assesment, which will provide you the scores in 12 readiness categories from digital infrastructure to adoption. We will then compare it with the national benchmarks and other similar local authorities, so you have a starting point to start measuring improvement.
4 more steps follow after the initial assessment.
